Family Life

The Family Life Committee, deals with the church "family", from providing health ministries through The Sister Elizabeth Fedde Health Ministry, to funeral luncheons for bereaved families through the Crisis Committee, to our Prayer Chain requests by and for members, families and friends, to the Annual Oyster Roast, Advent Wreath Workshop and Reformation Dinner.  Oh, and let's not forget the Fishing Fun Day!

These ministries help draw us closer to God and each other, by sharing each other's joys and sorrows. The fellowship we share helps us understand each other better, and helps God work through us to share his love, comfort and compassion.

We would be happy to have you help with any area you would like to share your talents!

A few more details:

  • Prayer Chain - Functioning as an 'as needed' ministry, we pray for those in need, be it illness, hospitalization, loss of family or friend. We pray for healing, happy news, and give thanks for miracles great and small.
  • Obituaries - linked to Carteret News Times & Raleigh News and Observer)
  • Crisis Committee - Several women make the phone calls requesting help with setting up the Fellowship Hall, preparing and bringing food after the funeral, serving the meal, and clean up.
  • Advent Wreath Workshop - This function is usually held the first week end in December. Starting with a lite supper of soup and sandwiches, we clear off the tables and then assemble Advent Wreaths that you can take home. The dinner and supplies are provided. Please bring gardening gloves and clippers. This is  a fun evening to spend with your church family.
  • Oyster Roast - Usually held the first full weekend in November, at a church members' home in Swansboro. In the Lutheran tradition of the potluck supper, this is a fun event for oyster lovers and non-oyster lovers alike.
  • Sister Elizabeth Fedde Health Ministry - This is our newest ministry, headed up by Phyllis Brehm our Parish Nurse, and is administered under the auspices of Carteret General Hospital. While termed a 'health ministry', it will not offer hands on care for the ill but rather would seek to offer comfort prayer, presence and spiritual guidance in the midst of illness. Sister Elizaeth Fedde was a Norwegian-American Deaconess who established many health ministries in the United States among poor Lutheran immigrants.*
  • Fishing Fun Day - Weather permitting, this event has been held at Oceananna Fishing Pier, sometime in October or November. We invite members and their guests, to come fish. Bait and a limited number of fishing poles are provided.
